Echo of a Journey
This painting is based on the only surviving photograph of the abandoned lighthouse on Cape Aniva.
The photograph was taken by a journalist and photographer who spent years preparing for the expedition and endured days of harsh weather to reach and document this remote and isolated place. Upon returning home, his camera equipment and entire photographic archive were stolen. Despite extensive efforts to recover them and the support of many people who joined the search, the images were never found.
Only a single photograph, preserved on a mobile phone, remained.
That fragile remnant of an extraordinary journey became the inspiration for this painting. More than a depiction of a lighthouse, this work is a tribute to perseverance, memory, and the enduring traces we leave behind. It reflects on how years of dedication and a fleeting moment of vision can vanish in an instant, and on the unique ability of art to preserve what time, distance, and circumstance threaten to erase.
